Berlin – Adlershof: A new building of the University, Institute of Physics.
The architects Augustin und Franke won a price. This building has some green roofs but more important are the rain water collection system.
The rain water is be used to irrigate about 150 plant containers at the facades of the five back yards.

The climbing plants shall evaporate the rain water to reduce the run off from the building. On the other hand, the plant species shall shade the glass facades in summe times.

This is a project funded by the Berlin government. It is world wide unique in using rain water and cooling the facades.

The research is a cooperation between three Universities. (Technical University, Humboldt University and the Univ. of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg – Green roof Centre).

The building is completed since Fall 2003, now the water quantity, the radiation data and others are monitored constant. Also the grows of the plant species.

The monitoring of the poject shall be finished in the beginning of 2007. If the project is successful, codes for new buildings in Berlin shall be developed from these experiences.

The calculation of benefits of eco methods but also the costs are analysed for better buildings in future.
